The Sad Cafe Receives $20,000
“3 to 6 Challenge Grant” from PlusTime NH
The Sad Cafe has been awarded a grant of $20,000 through the 3 to
6 challenge grant from Plus Time NH to improve program quality through
the enhancement of a volunteer program and the development of a
comprehensive financial sustainability plan. The grant will be used
over the next year in conjunction with technical assistance and
training from PlusTime NH to improve the quality and sustainability
of programs at The Sad Café.
The Sad Café’s mission is to provide, promote and
support positive life choices for the community through innovative
programming. Toward that end, The Sad Café offers a variety
of after school, out of school time and community service opportunities
to youth in the Sanborn and Timberlane school districts. Current
offerings include musical theater, making a rock band and an access
cable video show for by and about youth. The Sad Café has
secured funding from sources in the past to send youth to peer leadership
development retreats and has worked with local youth on the development
of a youth advisory board for The Sad Café and the youth
coalition of which it is a member. “The Sad Café recognizes
the importance of giving youth a voice in their community and has
this voice at the heart of our programming”, says Andrea Bonner,
Sad Café Executive Director. “The 3 to 6 grant will
allow us to continue to develop a means for local youth to express
themselves creatively while looking proactively at our plans to
sustain these important programs. The Sad Café serves an
important role in this community and we plan to continue that work
thanks to PlusTime and the generosity of their funders”.
PlusTime NH is a non-profit organization whose mission is to provide
the guidance, leadership, and support essential to create, expand,
and sustain afterschool programs in New Hampshire communities.
As Cynthia Billings, CEO of PlusTime NH says, “We want programs
to stay open, and to stay strong. With severe budget constraints,
programs are forced to focus on the day to day needs, at the risk
of future stability. This grant program is not just about giving
programs money, but giving our time, expertise and commitment to
help programs succeed.”
Funds for the 3-to-6 Challenge Grants were made possible through
donations from Autodesk, Inc., Bank of NH, the Benson Family Trust,
Business NH Magazine, Citizens Bank, Comcast, Infowave Technology,
Kids 1st Foundation, Mr. & Mrs. Gerard Montembeault of Dobles
Chevrolet, Buick and Hummer, NE Delta Dental, Providian Financial,
Schleuniger, Inc., Waste Management and Wheelabrator as well as
a federal grant from the Corporation for National and Community
Service.
